Mrs. Montijo’s Class Update 3/4/2019

 

 

Math 5:  We are in Module 3 and working hard on equivalent fractions. The students are drawing models to find equivalent fractions.  We are adding and subtracting fractions with unlike units and working on 2 step word problems. Please make sure your student is working on math each night.  If they have completed the days lesson, they are to work on Freckle Math.

 

Math 6: In Module 3 we are learning about negative numbers using the number line.  Real world examples of negative numbers such as elevation, banking (debit and credit) and temperature will be referenced frequently in this module.  Please make sure your student is working on math each night. If they have completed the days lesson, they are to work on Freckle Math.

 

Please continue to work on memorizing multiplication facts at home if your student has not mastered these.

 

Religion 5/6: We are continuing our journey through Genesis and focusing on the Abraham, Isaac and Jacob this unit. We will have a short quiz on Wednesday, March 6 over material covered so far in Unit 4.  Students should use the quizlet on Google Classroom to prepare for the quiz.

 

Religion 7/8: Morality and the obligation to form our consciences are the topics being discussed in Religion class.  A short quiz will be given on Wednesday March 6 over material we have covered so far in Unit 3. Students should use the quizlet on Google Classroom to prepare for the quiz.

 

March School Masses:  7th graders will be reading at the Wednesday Masses during March including Ash Wednesday.  The readers for Ash Wednesday are Alana, Anne, Natalie, and Brady. All readings are posted on Google Classroom for students to access in order to prepare at home.

Mrs. Montijo’s Class Update Week of 1/21/2019

 

Math 5:  STAR testing was completed last week and we have finished multi-digit and decimal multiplication.  We will review Tuesday and the assessment will be Thursday, January 24. The students have been introduced to a new adaptive tech learning tool called Freckle. Please encourage regular practice on this site or on Aleks.

Religion 5/6: This week we will be diving into the story of Cain and Abel as well as the story of Noah and the great flood. Students are now being asked to keep their Religion textbooks in their cubbies and bring them to class regularly rather than leaving them in the desk. Students are also responsible for bringing their Religion notebook to class.

Religion 7/8:  In Religion ⅞, we are marching through the history of our church from its very beginning when Jesus gave the Apostles’ their mission continuing through the present age. The class is making a timeline for display in our room which includes major events and councils. We will also be adding the lives of important Saints to our timeline as we continue our unit. This week we will be discussing Thomas Aquinas and the 5 proofs of God as well as the Protestant Reformation.

 

Our School Mass this month is Sunday, January 27.  The 5th graders will be reading at this Mass and assignment will be made this week.

 

Mrs. Montijo’s Class Update Week of 1/14/20109

 

Math 5:  In Math 5 we have progressed from multi-digit whole number multiplication to multi-digit decimal multiplication.  Students are gaining strength and understanding in this area. All assignments are posted on Google Classroom and our next assessment will be Thursday, January 17. We will be doing STAR Math testing on Tuesday, January 15.

Math 6:  In Math 6, we have been using models to understand division focusing on dividing whole numbers by fractions and fractions by whole numbers.  This week we will expand to dividing a fraction by a fraction. Students will be assessed on fraction division on Thursday, January 17. We will be doing STAR Math testing on Tuesday, January 15.

 

Religion 5/6: We are reading and discussing the story of creation in Genesis 1 and 2.  Students created beautiful bible quote posters using either Genesis or Psalm 8.  We will continue this week with Adam and Eve.

 

Religion ⅞:  In Religion ⅞, we are marching through the history of our church from its very beginning when Jesus gave the Apostles’ their mission continuing through the present age. The class is making a timeline for display in our room which includes major events and councils. We will also be adding the lives of important Saints to our timeline as we continue our unit.

Math 5:  Students should be preparing for the next assessment which will be:

Tuesday, December 18.  The test will cover multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm and area models.  Students should also be prepared to use estimation to show the reasonableness of their answers.

 

Math 6:  Students will be assessed on percent problems as well as percent, decimal, fraction equivalents on Tuesday, December 18.  If your student needs extra help, I am available every morning between 7:00 and 8:00.  The student should confirm with me in advance if possible in order to avoid conflicts.

 

If your student has not yet mastered the multiplication facts, daily work on Quicktables in ALEKS is necessary. Success in math is hindered without easy recall of these facts.

 

Religion 5/6:

 

I was so proud of our 6th graders in their performances in The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.  The 5th graders also did a wonderful job as the choir for this event.  A special thanks to all the parents that helped with costumes and preparing the readers.  This was truly a team effort and your help was greatly appreciated. I also want to thank our music teacher, Mr. Spurgiesz, and Miss Blaze for their help in preparing the students for this performance.

 

Reconciliation: December 19.  This is a good opportunity for you to discuss the importance of a good examination of conscience prior to their participation.  

 

In recognition of Advent, we have been learning about the tradition of the Jesse Tree which tells the story of God’s plan for our salvation through its ornaments depicting important characters in the story from God’s first creation until the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.  Students should continue to check Google Classroom for their assignments and ensure they are completing them. Jesse Tree Symbols is due Tuesday, December 18.

Christmas  Message from Mrs. Montijo:

 

As we enter this final week before Christmas break, I want to say how truly blessed I feel to be working with your children at St. Mary School.  I firmly believe that your children are precious gifts from God. It is an honor and privilege to partner with you in helping them realize this undeniable fact.  May they all continue to grow, develop and mature as God desires. I am most appreciative of the support you give me and the other teachers at St. Mary School and wish you all a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Math 5: We are working in Module 2 which focuses on multiplication of multi-digit numbers including decimal numbers. Students are using their understanding of place value to find shortcuts and mental math strategies for multiplying large numbers.  Students understanding of the standard algorithm for multi-digit multiplication will be deepened.

Next Assessment: Tuesday, December 18.

 

Math 6:  We are finishing Module 1 in Math 6 focusing on percents as ratios and fluency in percent, decimal, and fraction equivalents.  Students should continue to practice percent decimal, and fraction equivalents nightly as daily quizzing will continue until. Additionally, we will be working on solving percent word problems all week.

 

Next Assessment: Tuesday, December 18.

 

If your student has not yet mastered the multiplication facts, daily work on Quicktables in ALEKS is necessary. Success in math is hindered without easy recall of these facts.

 

Religion 5/6:

 

The 6th-grade class will be presenting The Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe after Mass on Wednesday, December 12. (The 5th grade will be our choir for this performance.)  Costumes have been sent home for cleaning and ironing. Please have your child bring their costume to Room 9 on Monday morning.  Students will change into their costumes after Mass on the 12th. Hope you to see you all there!

We have begun our unit on Church History and are focusing on the early church.  Google Classroom is a great help in keeping up with assignments. Please ensure that your student is checking our Religion ⅞ Classroom regularly.

Students are using their understanding of place value to find shortcuts and mental math strategies for multiplying large numbers.  We will be having more frequent assessments this trimester. Please expect an assessment every 2 weeks or so. Quizzes will be announced on Google Classroom.

 

Math 6:  We are finishing Module 1 in Math 6 focusing on percents as ratios and fluency in percent, decimal, and fraction equivalents.  This trimester, we will be having more frequent assessments approximately every two weeks. Please check Google Classroom for assignments and assessment dates.
