Language Arts:
This week we have finished putting together the instructions and learning about the purpose of our vocabulary notebook. Students have been busily searching for words and adding them to their bookmarks. Next week we will officially begin adding pages and words to our notebooks. This will be a part of their weekly homework. Since this notebook is an integral part of our vocabulary program I took a lot of time ensuring the students understood the guidelines. To find copies of the bookmarks and vocabulary pages click here.
By now all students should be set up with their No Red Ink account as well. This along with the 5-A-Day will be a part of their language arts homework. We are continuing to learn the skills in the 5-A-Day program and as we do this homework will increase.
8th graders began reading Our Lady of Fatima book. We are learning how to highlight and make notations for studying in non-fiction text. Next week 7th and 6th graders will work on this skill.
7th/6th SS:
We are learning about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Students have been adding pages to their interactive notebooks with fun activities, notes, and homework. We will have a test on chapter 1 next week. They can use the questions at the back of the chapter to help them study. We will also begin an activity where I will need supplies.
The following items would be greatly appreciated:
• 8 bars of Ivory soap (Ivory brand is the easiest to work with)
• A small bag of cloves
• 5 Styrofoam cups
• 5 Plastic knives
• Package of straws (not bendy straws)
Future 6/7 SS needs:

• Container of salt
• 7 Large sheets of cardboard (2’ x 2’)
• 5 Large sheets of cardboard (3’ x 3’)
• White glue (refill Gallon size would be great)
8th Grade SS
As an introduction activity to our Colonial studies students worked in groups to recreate a Jamestown. The skills that were challenged were reading and interpreting instructions, problem solving, critical thinking, and team work. They were also learning facts about early colonization. The students will be writing about what they learned from this experience next week.
