Today your child is bringing home a permission slip for our mission field trip. We will be visiting Mission San Antonio de Pala on Thursday, March 7th. We will leave at 8:30am and return by 1:30pm. Students must bring a disposable lunch that day and wear their regular school uniform. The cost for the field trip is $2. Your FACTS account will be charged. If you are interested in driving and chaperoning, please complete the safe environment training, defensive driving, and fill out the driver form attached to the permission slip. All forms are due back to me by Thursday, February 28th.
Religion: 4th Grade will be leading the school Mass on Saturday, February 23rd, at 5:30pm. All 4th graders will be participating in some way in this Mass. We will be practicing for the Mass in class during religion. On Saturday, please meet Ms. Silady by the piano at 5pm dressed in Mass attire uniform. Students will be receiving a participation grade in religion for their attendance and Mass behavior.
Language Arts: I’m excited to announce our next novel that we will be studying: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett published by Harper Collins, reprint in December 21, 2010. You can purchase the book on amazon here, or a bookseller of your choice. You can also check it out from the local library, however, we will need it in class every day. I’m asking that each 4th grader obtain a copy of the novel by Monday, February 25th. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Math Groups A and B: Module 5 Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations
Topic A: Decomposition and Fraction Equivalence
Students will:
- Decompose fractions into sums of smaller unit fractions using tape diagrams.
- Decompose unit fractions using area models to show equivalence.
- Decompose fractions using area models to show equivalence.
Math Group C: Module 5 Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations
Topic B: Fraction Equivalence Using Multiplication and Division
Students will:
- Use the area model and division to show the equivalence of two fractions.
- Use the area model and division to show the equivalence of two fractions.
- Explain fraction equivalence using a tape diagram and the number line, and relate that to the use of multiplication and division.
We will continue with multiplication timed tests. Please practice your math facts at home every night. Click here for a great practice sheet! To see the testing order, please refer to the recording chart in your child’s planner.
Social Studies:
The 4th Grade Mission Project has three parts:
- Research paper (completed in class)
- Rough draft, due 3/1
- Final typed report, due 3/8
- Project (completed at home)
- Project, due 3/15
- Presentation (practiced at home, presented in class)
- Week of 3/18
Please review the packet with your child and let me know if you have any questions. All due dates are included in the packet.
Pilot Module 2 Saint Junípero Serra and the Mission Era
Junipero Serra and the Mission Era: Impact on California Indians
Students will:
-
- Explain how no matter how amazingly skilled the Native Peoples became, they were never given the same respect as the Spanish artisans in the mission community
- Explain how Native Peoples struggled during the Mission Era to preserve their cultures, languages, and traditions
- Explain how the missionaries forever changed the lives of the California Native Peoples.
Some changes were positive. Some were negative. - Explain why Pope Francis acknowledged that “grave sins were committed against the Native Peoples of America in the name of God.”
Science: Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources
Students will:
- Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses affect the environment.

2/23 Saturday: 5pm meet Ms. Silady by the piano (formal uniform required), School Mass at 5:30pm
