Ms. Egan’s Newsletter 10/12

Hello Middle School Families,
Thanks to everyone who came to the Fall Fiesta and 7th grade Mass on Sunday! Our next school mass will be 6th grade in November.

5/6 Language Arts:
5th and 6th graders have been practicing close reading skills over the past week with Iqbal. We have focused on finding textual evidence and making inferences. We will be continuing focus on these and other close reading skills throughout the year. Students are also into their second draft of their personal narrative, being typed on their laptops. As they do this, they are also working on their word processing and typing skills. In addition, I have started individual goal setting conferences with each student in order to set goals for personal growth in reading, writing, and collaboration. I will be continuing these conferences next week.

7/8 Language Arts:
7th and 8th graders are just about done with The Outsiders! They had their last quiz this past week, and the unit test is coming up in the next week and a half. Once we finish the novel, we’ll jump right into the writing assignment for the unit: an Outsiders inspired narrative essay. Our next novel study will be Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, and I couldn’t be more excited for this! We will begin this second novel study at the beginning of November. If students are interested, the graphic novel version of To Kill A Mockingbird is available for sale on October 30! I have the flyer posted in my classroom.

8th Grade:
Dons Day is THIS COMING TUESDAY!!!! We still need drivers so please let me know ASAP if you can drive. It’ll be fun!
8th graders have also begun the portfolio process! They will have monthly tasks leading up to presentations at the end of the year.
