Ms. Egan’s Newsletter 9/27

Happy October. Middle School Families!
The Fall Fiesta is just one week away! As a reminder, the 7th graders will do the Fall Fiesta Mass on Sunday 10/7 at 10:30am. Please have your 7th grader at the Mass at 10:00 in their Mass uniform. They will be able to change into their Fall Fiesta clothing after the Mass in time for the performance. The 7th grade Mass is a requirement for 7th graders, and the Fall Fiesta performance is mandatory for all St. Mary students. However, if you have a prior engagement, please let your student’s homeroom teacher know as soon as possible if he/she cannot attend.

5/6 Language Arts:
5th and 6th graders are about halfway through their first novel study, Iqbal, and the 6th graders had their first reading comprehension quiz this past week. 5th graders will have theirs this coming week. In addition to novel study, the 5th graders mastered interjections, the 6th graders mastered objective pronouns, and both grades are finishing up their rough drafts of their personal narratives. Please continue to have conversations with them regarding their chosen narrative topic so they can add in as much exciting detail as they can!

7/8 Language Arts:
The 7th and 8th graders are wrapping up some creative writing projects: a Robert Frost inspired poem and a spoken word project. Their spoken word is due on Monday and they will be performed in individual classes throughout the week. Students are also working on their first CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) argumentative paragraph for The Outsiders. This is a cross-curricular writing skill that they will use all the way through college. Aside from writing, the 8th graders are continuing with verbals, and the 7th graders began subordinating conjunctions and relative pronouns this week. These grammar skills will continue into next week. The Outsiderssparks an interest in the era of the 1960’s, so students had the opportunity to research some popular 60’s toys to create and perform a commercial selling their product to an audience of kids and teens. The winner of the 8th grade commercial contest is … Coca Cola! The 7th graders will perform their commercials on Tuesday.

8th Grade Families: Saints/OLP Permission Slips due on Monday!

Dons Day and Saints/OLP Days are coming up soon! Students get to spend half a day at the high school with all the other Catholic schools in the diocese to see what a day in the life of a Catholic high school student is like. This is a fun opportunity for all 8th graders, even if you aren’t planning on having them attend a Catholic school. All 8th grade students will attend as a field trip this year. OLP/Saints Day is on Thursday, 10/4, and Dons Day at Cathedral is on Tuesday, 10/16. We still need a driver to take our 4 boys to Saints this coming Thursday! You do not need to have an 8th grade boy to drive them down. If you are available to drive them, please let me know ASAP.  Also, if you are interested in driving to CCHS on the 16th, please contact me.
