A look at our week:

Religion:  This week we reviewed Unit 3.  Next week, we will begin Chapter 22.  In this chapter the students will learn about the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love.  They will also learn that these virtues enable us to love God and others, as exemplified by the lives of the saints.

4th Language Arts:  This week we asked the question “How do people from different cultures contribute to American history?” In the biography Sacagawea, students read about an indispensable member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. And Native American Nature Poetry were give students a glimpse into the relationship between Native Americans and the natural world.

  • Target Vocabulary: appreciate, blaring, combination, promptly, introduce, nocturnal, feats, effort, suggest, racket   (Vocab homework can be found vocab.)
  • Vocabulary Strategy: Using context
  • Comprehension Skill: Theme—examine characters’ qualities and motives to recognize the theme
  • Comprehension Strategy: Summarize— use your own words to express the important ideas in a selection
  • Writing Focus: Informative writing— summary
  • Don’t forget our class has a Quizlet account with the Vocabulary and Spelling words for both 4th and 5th grade.
  • Spelling:  See Focus Wall (Homework assignment can be found here.) Please note: The challenge words are included in our weekly Spelling tests and must be included in the homework.

5th Language Arts:  As the class worked through this unit, the student thought about the question “What can a person learn by building a relationship with an animal?”  This week began with The Black Stallion, an adventure story about a boy and a horse stranded on a deserted beach, trying to survive by learning to trust one another.  We also read Horse Power, an informational text about the different ways horses help people.

4th Grade Math:  Chapter 9 Adding and Subtracting Fractions

4th Grade AM Group: Chapter 10 Geometry

5th Grade Math:  Chapter 8 Adding and Subtracting Decimals

5th Grade Tiger Lily Group:  Chapter 12 Metric Measurement, Area, and Volume

Social Studies:  We are learning about the men and women who founded and built the English colonies in North America.  We have started Chapter 5 on the New England Colonies.
